Meals: Before or after chemotherapy?

Only those that go through the treatment know the body's reactions and needs during this period.

Sickness, nausea, mouth sores and even change in our palate become routine in the patient's life. But have you ever considered that the time of your meals can influence much of this?

Besides following a light and balanced diet, responsible for delivering the body the energy it needs, the patient needs to also beware the times of their meals. To eat before or after chemotherapy?

There isn't a single answer to this question. Each patient must observe at which times the symptoms appear or become more intense, and establish a plan with the help of their doctor. Some feel better having eaten a light meal beforehand, some rather to eat afterwards, and some eat throughout the session.

The general medical orientation points towards eating well during treatment days, avoiding fasting – specially since the nausea can be caused exactly by an empty stomach. The recommendations are a diet based in complex carbohydrates and protein, besides plenty of water before and after the session.

For these reasons, each individual must observe their body's needs and the reactions that come along, to understand what times are the most appropriate to avoid the symptoms to become more severe.
