CFM is positioned regarding Ozonioterapia

The resolution of the Federal Medical Council was published in the Official Gazette on June 10, making public its position in relation to Ozonotherapy.

According to CFM, Ozonotherapy is an experimental treatment. Therefore, it must meet certain criteria defined by the National Commission for Research Ethics (Conep). They are: the agreement of patients to perform clinical research; the confidentiality and anonymity of patients; in case of adverse reactions, medical support and non-collection must be offered at all stages of the research.

The publication of this resolution means that physicians cannot prescribe such treatment outside the conditions described above.

What is Ozonotherapy?

Ozonotherapy is a treatment method that uses the mixture of ozone and oxygen gases. This mixture is applied in various ways for therapeutic purposes. However, there is insufficient scientific evidence to validate its efficacy and safety.

CFM therefore does not recommend that it be prescribed as standard treatment. The use of this technique has no guaranteed efficacy and may delay a possible treatment.

Process in the Congress

The Federal Senate Bill 227/2017, initiated by Senator Valdir Raupp (PMDB / RO) and supported by the Brazilian Association of Ozonotherapy, although widely criticized by several medical entities, was approved by the Social Affairs Commission and forwarded to the Chamber of Deputies.

This project provides the Ozonioterapia as a complementary treatment throughout the national territory.

Fifty-five entities that oppose this project say that the release of Ozonotherapy "exposes patients to risks, such as delayed initiation of effective treatments, disease progression and health impairment."
